Where to stay in Porto de Galinhas: Pousada Tabapitanga

Tabapitanga in the Tupi language means "red villas". You will reach them at the end of a long and narrow road by which some impressive soaring palm trees grow. Located at the Pontal do Cupe beach, five kilometers from Porto de Galinhas, a major tourist destination, guarantees a secluded stay in a lovely setting while still being close to the best attractions of the town.

The biggest assets of this small hotel are beautifully kept garden, swimming pool area with magnificent view at the wavy ocean and direct access to the wide and endless beach. There are only 50 apartments but only a couple of them have direct ocean view  I'd recommend booking one of those as there is nothing more pleasant than waking up to the view of the bright sun rays sparkling on the water.

Apart from splendid views, Tabapitanga can also boast with terrific colourful buffet breakfasts (served till 10.30 a.m.). Over fifteen different fresh fruits are available daily, a selection of cakes, two delicious freshly squeezed juices every day and tapiocas, savoury as well as sweet, that are prepared by the staff just for you. This was definitely the best breakfast we've had in Brazil!

The apartments are clean and quite spacious, with a comfortable hammock outside. Though you should be making the most of your stay at this paradise by relaxing at the beach, in the garden or just by visiting nearby villages, I found the room very basic and I'm sure it would be much more pleasant if renovated.

There is an à la carte restaurant on site led by chef Maria. It offers a wide range of drinks, fruit juices, snacks and meals which are served thorough the whole day, also at the beach. What deserves a special mention is a dish I ate three times during our two-night stay: caldo tabapitanga de frutos do mar  a dense and filling sea food broth with an intense coconut and fresh coriander flavour, served with lime. Delícia! For a lighter option, go for a salada sartaneja with sun-dried meat and local coalho cheese.

Also, make sure you wake up one day very early in the morning, step out of your room and just marvel at the beauty of the sun rising above the ocean. The colour palette of the sky at this time of day is difficult to translate into photos.

We really enjoyed our stay at Tabapitanga. I loved the fact that despite high season, the beach was virtually empty. The hotel is colourful. peaceful and relaxing, great both for families and couples. Wouldn't mind coming back one day!
