Where to stay in Natal: Kaná Pousada de Charme

When we arrived at Kaná, a chilled coconut water and a wide smile of the owner was already waiting for us in the garden. The wind was mildly moving the plants and coco trees around while we were sipping the refreshing drink and looking at the ocean not quite believing we've just escaped from severe European winter.

The pousada was opened by a lovely Portuguese couple, Vitor and Alexandra, who had clearly put their heart and soul in the creation of the place, which used to be their vacation property. In fact, they still live there and are always present for the guests. No wonder we couldn't help but notice their pride and joy at showing us around  it took them seven years until they transformed their home into a small paradise (mostly) for newlywed couples.

A short two-minute walk took us to a very calm and wide beach called Pirangi where the water in the ocean was ridiculously warm  putting a foot in it was like stepping into a bathtub, what a feeling! The neighbourhood is tranquil and calm, the only sounds we heard was ocean waves, palm trees moving on the wind and some animals like adorable little monkeys or birds chirping at dawn. There are just a few apartments, so we rarely saw other guests around and spending time on the hammocks or in the pool during the day (or night) felt as if it was actually our holiday home.

All eight unique apartments and common areas were designed by Alexandra, while Vitor decorated the interiors and the garden with his paintings. Decorative elements and even beautiful wooden pieces of furniture were brought from their travels and renovated to enrich the interiors and give them a remarkable rustic finish.

Vitor also enjoys cooking, so he's the chef who will cook for you his specials upon request. You can either count on his creativity (as we did) or simply choose some petiscos (snacks) from the menu. Even though he's been living outside Portugal for many years, he likes to add Portuguese touches to dinners, so don't be surprised if you receive Portuguese sardines and olives for a starter or a glass of Licor Beirão after dessert. Make sure you eat a mango (from the garden) flambed with Brazilian cachaça  it's deliciously addictive.

Breakfasts are served to the table and include seasonal fruit, Brazilian traditional tapioca (a crunchy white pancake made of cassava flour), fried egg, freshly squeezed juice, homemade cakes, ham and local cheese, yoghurt with homemade jam, and what's probably the best thing about it  it's served until noon!

Vitor and Alexandra are remarkable hosts and their guest house feels like a small private paradise. We're very glad that we've chosen it over touristy Natal and let ourselves enjoy three days on a luxurious getaway. It was a perfect beginning for our big Brazil trip.
